an afternoon at the cinema

We went to se the film Les hommes et des Dieux Tues afternoon at the cinema here in Pessac. It's won several awards at the Cannes film festival & is a true story..
about a French Roman Catholic monastery in the hills of Morocco, and how a muslim village grew up around them & how they helped the villagers with daily tasks, medicines, admin etc, when the Islamic terrorists arrive & start their campaigne..

It was a good film, showed how the monks had to decide wether to stay where they were (they were in danger themselves) or to go..the terrorists came to them to get medicines & it was a tense moment, two of the monks went & hid..The villagers I suppose were a bit superstitious in that they felt the monastery was their protection from the terrorists, but they lived a peaceful co exsitence..the monks would be invited to their festivals, & would go ...

To stay or go was obviously a huge decision to make, but throughout it showed the human side to the men, how they stood together though at times were obviously terrified, how the leader of the monastery was very faithful to all the guys, not criticising them for their 'lack of faith'or fear, in their difficulties, but encouraging them, determined to do what they felt God had called them to do..when the terrorists arrived at the monastery to demand medicines, two of the monks hid in fear... well what would you or I do??

At the end of the film the whole audience just got up & walked out in silence! It was amazing..

Yesterday on the way home from taking Catrin to school, on the radio one of the villagers was being interviewed..she had only been a child at the time (late 1980's) talking about Father Luc who had been the doctor, & how he gave advice on all sorts of matters including how one knows if you're really in love! She said the monks were all very kind & helpful..

It was a very interesting & thought provoking film....
