Each week, I get together with Liz to read "Respectable sins" by Jerry Bridges..
the back of the book says this
"Have Christians become so preoccupied with the major sins of our society that we have lost sight of our need to deal with our own more subtle sins?'
He says that the root of our sins starts with Ungodliness..
"living one's everyday life with little or no thought of God, or of God's will, or of God's glory, or of one's dependence on God"
Seldom thinking of our dependance upon Him..
It helps so much to read a good book with some one, then you have the opportunity to discuss, and share what you think. I think today made me realise even more that God is in control of even the little things in my life.
This morning we looked at anxiety & frustration, then discontentment..We accept readily that we get frustrated, anxious and we become discontent, but then we forget that being this way means we are saying to God "I don't trust you!" and that God doesn't care! but it is sin to worry, to be anxious.
The bible tells us
"do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer & petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God, and the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard you hearts & minds in Christ Jesus" philipians 4v 6-7..and
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in the barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" and so on...
Another day I am reading a book called "The gospel for real life" also by Jerry Bridges! with a friend...the gospel being the solution to our greatest problem.;we have only just started reading this, so far he has talked about the cross as the centre of Christianity.;we have only read 2 chapters and so dont know much so far...
This all came about cos Liz's Josh said something one Sunday evening at the International church meeting...How God can use children to talk to us daft adults eh!
He says that doesn't mean we don't pray about the things that are causing us anxiety, of course not, but we pray with the knowledge that God has it under control , He has his agenda for us already and we are to trust him in this.
We need to remind ourselves of the scriptures that tell us of God's sovereignty, His infinite care & perfect love for those who trust in Him
